This month, eh? March came in like a lion and out, well, actually, not allowed out except for groceries. With the Coronavirus pandemic in full swing and the self-distancing/quarantining at a high, I can’t think of a more apt time for the Sweet Shit Round Up. We’re stuck inside, looking for things to fill our time, and to be real, we could all use something to make this time just a little more sweet.
Books
Three Wishes - Liane Moriarty
- Having to stay at home has really helped my TBR pile. While I’m still making my way through Needful Things from last month, I was able to finish this book by Liane Moriarty, who also wrote Big Little Lies which is a great book and a pretty good series on HBO. Three Wishes follows a set of 30 something triplets as they navigate their lives through a series of traumatic events and happy accidents. Was this one of the best books I’ve ever read? Nah, it was a little predictable, but it was something that held my focus for two days and what more can I ask for when days of the week have lost all meaning. I do really enjoy Moriarty’s writing though and have decided to work my way through her catalog so be on the look out for future updates!
- Libraries are one of the best places on the planet. You can have clubs there, use the internet, make copies, check out books, movies, and (at some locations) video games for nothing at all! While I have a decent book collection that I love, most of the books I read come from the library because it’s so important to support them and also I’m too damn broke to be buying books all the time. But with the libraries closed, at least in Pittsburgh, it can make getting books a bit tougher. Luckily, the Libby app exists. You can download digital and even audio library books straight to your phone or Kindle, all you need is your library card to sign up. Find the Libby app in the App Store or Google Play.
Games
- Stuck inside with nothing but time on your hands? Video games are a great way to escape the real world for a while. I use my Playstation 4 every day either for gaming or watching Youtube/Hulu. This might be one of the best things I own. It’s a little pricey at around $300, which means something during these financially insecure times, but you can still actually find one unlike the Nintendo Switch (which has become my white whale,) and it pays for itself in entertainment in no time. Plus, I feel like everyone is entitled to one crazy quarantine purchase (buttloads of toilet paper don’t count) that’s just the rules of quarantine.
- When the world is suffering a pandemic, immersing yourself in a video game where the world has been overrun by a virus is really the only thing to do. I love this series and fully intend to go into depth on it in an upcoming post but in the mean time, we’ve been working our way through the series in preparation for the new Resident Evil 3 remake that drops April 3rd. The last two weeks we’ve played through the original Resident Evil Remake and the prequel, Resident Evil 0. I had never played RE 0 before and only ever watched others play RE 1 so it’s been fun to revisit and experience these games for myself. Did I play them both on easy for the first runs? Sure did, judge me. But those fixed camera angles take a minute to get used to and I wasn’t trying to get boned from the jump.
Youtube
- Do you love cringing? Do you love awkward speed dating encounters? Do you have the attention span of a goldfish? Have I got the show for you! The Button is a youtube show from the Cut channel. It currently has four episodes all 10 minutes or less showcasing a group of singles as they cycle through a speed date situation where they can dump their partner with the press of a button. Sometimes they cut them off mid friendly convo and it’s real awkward. Highly recommend!
Products
- I love good skin. Not in like a Buffalo Bill kind of way. But I do admire a beautiful complexion and strive to have one of my own. These sheet masks are an easy way to make you feel like you’re doing something nice for your skin. I almost always have an overabundance of them on a shelf in my bathroom because you can get a 16, 24, or 39 pack for a reasonable price. I wore these almost everyday the week leading up to my wedding and for me, they seemed to make my skin blemish free and nicely moisturized. I mean, who can’t use a little self-care during the quarantine? *If you have sensitive skin, be sure to test them on your arm or something before throwing them on your face to check for any kind of reaction.*
- Being stuck at home with family or roommates can be fun. It can also be trying. Not having a lot of space to separate to work or have some alone time can set everyone on edge. Fifteen days into self-distancing and we’ve finally discovered the small privacy of noise cancelling headphones. We got this pair as a bridal shower present last summer and hadn’t had a chance to use them much but now they’re kind of a lifesaver. My husband wears them while he works/takes online classes and that allows me to do/watch/play/sing whatever I want cause he’s mostly oblivious to the goings on of the room with those headphones on. We’re alone together to do our own thing while still only being a few feet apart which during this time of unknown, is pretty cool.
- How much are people planning on shitting during this quarantine? Toilet paper is in high demand and limited as fuck supply cause of all the assholes who bought 300 rolls from jump to hoard and make TP forts with I guess cause what the hell else do you need that much for? If you weren’t one of those assholes and are now scouring the stores for a single pack, might I suggest investing in a bidet? My husband bought a bidet a couple of years ago and I’ll be honest, I have yet to ever use it. BUT! I’m grateful for his forethought and the way having this sucker makes the anxiety of running out of toilet paper not as big of a deal. There are handheld bidets and bidets you attached to the toilet bowl that do all the work for you. They’re also a better option for the planet if you’re into that kind of thing!

Car Rides
- I know we’re not supposed to be leaving the house and mostly, I’ve been doing my part. But goddamn sometimes you’ve just got to get out! Car rides have become a nice treat every few days to get out and see the city while not putting ourselves or others at risk. We’ve even been able to discover some cute spots that would normally be jam packed on a beautiful spring day but were totally empty. I never thought I’d be so excited about a regular car ride but here we are.
