A Spooky Bitch’s Guide to Halloween Viewing

It’s October 1st!

So what choice did I have but to put together my own 31 horror/Halloween movies which I have dubbed “A Spooky Bitch’s Guide to Halloween Viewing.” I mean…everyone else is doing it!

Below you’ll find my personal list for the 31 horror or Halloween movies I plan on watching over the course of October. This list is in no particular order since we just plan on picking one at random to watch each night. Some are classics that I already love but most are going to be first time watches that could be great or a total dud. That’s part of the Halloween horror fun! I put together brief summaries of everything we’re gonna check out to give you a chance to decide if there’s anything you might want to add to your own list this season.

*Be advised: I DID check where all of these movies were currently streaming but God knows these things move around constantly…so my bad if you go to look for it and it’s moved somewhere else since I last checked.

A Spooky Bitch’s Guide to Halloween Viewing

The Lighthouse  (Prime)

- Two lighthouse keepers slowly go mad in the 1890s and I’m pretty sure Robert Pattinson fucks a mermaid in it? Figuring out how that would work is honestly enough for me to check it out.

Pumpkinhead  (Pluto)

Pumpkinhead poem by Ed Justin

Pumpkinhead poem by Ed Justin

- Inspired by a poem by Ed Justin, Pumpkinhead is a demon creature who destroys anyone it is summoned to attack. This feels like one any horror fan has to see at least once but like…he doesn’t even have a pumpkin head. What’s that about?

Invasion of the Bodysnatchers 1978 (Prime & Pluto)

- Aliens show up and start making exact duplicates of the people on Earth leading to some trouble in knowing who can be trusted and who is no good. This remake has always been on my list and the original can also be found on Prime.

Idle Hands (Pluto)

- Devon Sawa plays a stoner teen Anton whose hand suddenly turns evil. Without help from Anton, his hand goes on a killing spree leaving Anton to clean up the mess. This is a silly one that I haven’t seen in years but can’t wait to appreciate the goofy gore of it.

Addams Family Values (YouTube & Paramount+)

- I talked about this one in my Spooky Shit Round Up last week, which you can read here. Basically, if you haven’t seen it yet, literally stop what you’re doing and go watch Joan Cusack attempt to wreak havoc on the Addams Family in this sequel which far surpasses its predecessor.

Hell House LLC (Tubi)

- Another one from this year’s Spooky Shit Round Up. Found footage movies are my kryptonite…good or bad. But this one is very good. The mystery at the Abbadon Hotel will make you think twice about stepping into that next haunted attraction.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Tubi)

- You know Buffy’s story. An average gal finds out she’s actually the once in a generation vampire slayer who must be trained to take on a great evil that’s trying to take over. Ew Joss Whedon. Ew Kristy Swanson. But dammit the Buffy movie is so good and a favorite and Paul Reubens has the funniest death scene ever recorded.

The Blair Witch Project (Shudder)

- *insert movie announcer voice* Three student filmmakers disappear in the woods outside of Burkitsville, Maryland. A year later their footage is found. Probably my favorite scary movie of all time and the pioneer of found footage films. I’ve seen this movie over a hundred times at this point, can quote it verbatim, still get scared.

The Thing (Starz)

- A science camp in the arctic find themselves in an unfortunate situation with the arrival of a dog at their base who turns out couldn’t be further from your average dog. The team’s trust is then put to the test as they must decide if their friends are actually still their friends or an alien species who makes perfect duplicates in a bid to take over the world.

House of the Devil (Tubi)

- A girl takes a babysitting job in the hopes of earning money towards a new apartment. But when she arrives she realizes there’s no child to watch but rather an elderly woman. Turns out, the house and her employers have some secrets that could spell her doom.

The Changeling (Tubi)

- A man dealing with serious grief moves to a new house in the hopes for a change but becomes embroiled in the mystery of the drowning death of a little boy who previously lived there. I’ve heard this is one of the scariest movies around and I’m hoping it stands up to that praise.

Session 9 (Shudder)

- A team of asbestos removal workers show up at their next job: an abandoned insane asylum. The team face a world of terror amongst growing tensions and mysterious occurrences. Will they make it out of this job intact?

Blood Red Sky (Netflix)

- We love a vampire story in this house and I’m 97% sure this is a vampire story. A mysteriously ill woman must unleash a monstrous secret to protect her son on their hijacked flight. Color me intrigued.

Hubie Halloween (Netflix)

- A simple man who loves Halloween finds himself in the middle of a mystery when members of his small town community go missing.  Listen, I’m just as stunned as you about this one making the list but it’s actually pretty cute and fun and definitely one of the better Adam Sandler comedies of the recent past.

The Strangers (Netflix)

- It’s been years since I’ve seen this one about a couple spending the weekend at a family vacation home but their relaxing time gets turned on its head with the arrival of a mysterious woman at the door. Soon the couple is struggling to survive against a trio of masked torturers whose motives are maybe the most terrifying thing of all.

The Clovehitch Killer (Netflix)

- A son finds evidence that may prove his beloved father is actually a serial murder of little girls from a decade prior. Seeing perfect families torn apart by heinous acts? Call me a bad person but I find it entertaining.

Blackwood Evil (Tubi)

- “Four paranormal investigators record their final hours as they succumb to demonic attacks.”

The Perfection (Netflix)

- A music prodigy returns to her music school to discover her place has been taken by another forcing both women to “embark down a sinister path.” I think I’ve heard that this is a pretty fucked up movie which has me like…well how fucked up is it?

Ghostbusters (Rent on Prime)

- Who ya gonna call? Literally any of the three versions of this franchise will do! Scientists go on a ghost hunt and hijinks ensue. You know the deal.

Trick ‘r Treat (HBO Max)

- Interwoven stories that prove that some traditions are meant to be kept or face the wrath of Sam.

Tales of Halloween (Tubi)

- A ten tale anthology surrounding all the usual terrors one may find on Halloween night.

The Final Girls (Tubi)

- A girl heads to the theater to watch her recently deceased mother in a B horror movie she had made 20 years earlier but she and her friends find themselves transported into the film and must apply their horror trope knowledge to survive.

Train to Busan (Tubi)

- A zombie outbreak occurs in South Korea forcing a man to take his daughter on, you guessed it, the train to Busan in the hopes of finding a safe haven. But things go bad, as they often do, when the outbreak traps them on the train in a fight for their lives. I’ve only ever seen this once but it’s left a lasting impression and I hate that they’re trying to make an American remake. Hate. It.

Ernest Scared Stupid (YouTube)

- If you read this year’s Spooky Shit Round Up you already know my thoughts on this one. It’s a classic from my childhood! A troll comes back to town, turning kids into dolls in the hopes of bringing his troll buddies back to terrorize the neighborhood.

Halloween 2018 (Rent on Prime)

- You can’t keep a good man down, amirite? In this new Halloween entry, it’s been 40 years since Laurie Strode’s harrowing Halloween night that saw her friends murdered and her life changed forever. When Michael escapes the asylum this time around, Laurie’s ready to battle…oh and there’s no sibling story in this version.

Halloween Kills (In Theaters and on Peacock same day)

- Laurie leads a mob through Haddonfield in the hopes of taking Michael down for good. Obviously I haven’t seen this one yet since it’s not out but…I’m gonna go out on a limb that it doesn’t work cause the end to this trilogy is coming October 2022.

Last Shift (Tubi & Prime)

- Bad shit goes down during the last shift at a transitioning police station while the cop on duty waits for the hazardous materials crew to show up and cart of some bio-medical evidence.

Black Swan (Hulu)

- Obsessive ballerina Nina finds herself in a rivalry with a fellow ballerina for the lead in Swan Lake. Will Nina come out on top or will the pressure prove too much for her fragile psyche?

The Host (Tubi & Prime)

- Americans dump chemicals into a South Korean river causing a creature to emerge a few years later and attacks the residents. When their daughter is taken by the creature, a vendor and his family feel like they’re the only ones who can save her. Bong Joon-ho of Parasite fame directed this one earlier in his career.

Last Night in Soho (In Theaters)

- An aspiring fashion designer finds herself able to travel back to the 1960s but soon the glamour starts to crack and turn into something much darker.

Come to Daddy (Prime)

- Elijah Wood stars in this one about a man who arrives at the remote, coastal cottage of his estranged father. He realizes his dad is not only a dick but shady af with his past racing to catch up with him.

And since there are only so many days in the month, I decided to include an extra list of the horror and Halloween movies I consider to be honorable mentions, that I’d check out should time and access allow, or as a swap out should we suddenly not be able to find certain ones on the main list.

Practical Magic (HBO Max)

- Sandra. Nicole. Stockard. Dianne. Margaritas. Abusive boyfriends. Witchcraft. I could easily watch this movie once a month.

It Follows (Shudder)

- I didn’t like It Follows on my first viewing but watched it again after a couple of years and liked it a lot better. The mindless following of ‘it’ can be hella disturbing.

Double Double Toil and Trouble (Hulu)

- The Olsen twins giving all the sassy witch vibe you could ever want as they face off against Cloris Leechman’s (RIP) wicked Aunt Agatha. Loved it as a kid still love it now.

Slither (Prime)

- This one’s silly but in a gross way. Alien wormies try to take a town over and the only ones who can stop it are Nathan Fillion and Elizabeth Banks. Sure.

Candyman (Peacock)

- If you’ve seen the new one (which is brilliant) you might want to check out the original and see if you can spot all the tie-ins.

Hush (Netflix)

- Mike Flanagan and Kate Siegel, currently the ultimate horror duo. Hush follows a deaf author who is being terrorized in her own home by an intruder…but she doesn’t hear the threat until it’s too late.

Night of the Living Dead (Tubi, Prime)

- The original. The classic. You know it. I know it. Zombies.

30 Days of Night (Prime)

- Vampires in Alaska. That’s about all I know but I’d like to learn more.

The Babysitter and The Babysitter: Killer Queen (Netflix)

- What’s not to like about a horror comedy? A 12 year old finds out his beloved babysitter is part of a satanic cult and has no choice but to take her down. The sequel is equally fun.

1922 (Netflix)

- I read the Stephen King novella last year and enjoyed it but haven’t had a chance to watch this Thomas Jane lead adaptation set in the midwest. Rats. Beware of rats.

The Craft (HBO Max)

- Witchy teen bitches at their finest, what more can I say?

The Void (Tubi)

- Few things are scarier than hospitals…except for when a weird cloak clad cult has that hospital surrounded.

The Wailing (Tubi & Prime)

- “Suspicion leads to hysteria when rural villagers link a series of brutal murders to the arrival of a mysterious stranger."

Clown (Tubi)

- A man dons a clown outfit for his son’s birthday party….but the suit won’t come off when it’s over. Trust me, this one gets pretty scary.

REC (Shudder)

- The Spanish original version of what eventually got remade into the U.S.’s Quarantine. Much better, much scarier, and the first in a trilogy that are all worth a watch.

Teeth (Pluto)

- VAGINA DENTATA!!! That’s pretty much all you need to know.
