The Lazy Witch 2
5 More Spells and Rituals to Celebrate Samhain
Well well well, what do you know? It looks like we’ve once again circled around to the most magical time of year.
If you read last year’s The Lazy Witch post (which what are you doing if you haven’t? Click on that link and check it out!) you learned about my lifelong dream to be a witch along with my lifelong penchant for laziness and for a long time…those two things just didn’t quite mix. Until now.
See, I realized it’s totally possible to be both lazy and witchy, it’s just a matter of how in depth you really want to get with your spells and rituals and apparently, a lot of you agreed because last year’s Lazy Witch post still remains as one of my most popular posts since starting this blog!
So let’s bring it back! For 2021, I’ve put together a list of five more simple spells and rituals I’ve found around the internet to celebrate Samhain (or Halloween for non pagan, wiccan, or witchcraft believers) just in time for the full moon! So bust out those tarot decks, crystals, and jars of moon water….we’ve got some magic to do.
*As always, use magic and spells at your own risk. There are no guarantees any of these spells or rituals will bring you your desired outcome so go into them with an open mind and just looking to have some fun*
5 More Spells and Rituals to Celebrate Samhain
For this spell you will need:
1-3 bells (ideally on strings you can hang) or a set of wind chimes
Your front door
Find yourself 1 - 3 bells on strings/yarn/rope
Tie or hang the bells from the door handle on the inside of your house
Recite the following as you hang the bells:
Guard our home, bell on the door.
Let evil spirits come no more.
Evil spells shall not be cast and good fortune shall ever last.
Allow the bells to scare off any bad energy from entering your home
* If you already have wind chimes hanging around your yard or porch, you can also just grab those and hang them closer to the front door while reciting the above spell and they’ll keep out those bad vibes just the same*
For this ritual you will need:
A packet of seeds (your choice
A small dish
A white candle and something to hold it in
A pouch or bag for the seeds
Optional: a small plant pot
On the night before performing your charm, gather your dish, candle, and seeds
Place your seeds into the dish and light the candle
Think about the ancestors you are hoping to honor and remember with this ritual and repeat the following:
Gone from sight
But not from heart
Merry meet
Merry part
Leave the seeds in the dish overnight and allow the candle to burn down completely (be sure to do this in a safe place…we don’t want no house fires for the ancestors)
When ready, place seeds in the pouch and carry in your right hand to the spreading spot
When at the spreading location, take the seeds out to scatter while reciting the following three times:
You are remembered
And held in my heart
Watch as your seeds begin to grow in honor of your loved one
*The spreading spot can be in your garden, a place that reminds you of your ancestor, or in that optional gardening pot*
Host a Dumb Dinner
*Dumb dinners are silent dinners held to honor the dead. This is easily the most labor intensive one since you’re technically holding a party but I think it’s my favorite on this list*
For this ritual you will need:
Dinner Guests (roommates and family that live in the house count)
A dinner table with enough chairs for each attendee and an extra chair for the dead
Food of your choosing
The ability to be totally silent for one meal time
A tea light candle for each departed loved one you wish to honor
Optional: each guest writes a letter to the departed loved one of their choosing
Prepare your food and set your table before hand
The head of the table is reserved for dead loved ones
Set up lit tea lights around the setting for dead loved ones
Turn off all phones, tvs, radios
Observe the following ritual for the dinner:
Absolutely NO TALKING once you enter the dining room/dinner space
Each guest must stop at the Spirit chair to offer a silent prayer or greeting to the dead
Once seated, guests join hands and silently bless the meal
The host is seated across from the Spirit chair
Host serves the meal from oldest to youngest - but no one must eat until all guests (including the deceased ones) have been served
Optional: When everyone has finished eating, guests may take their letters one by one to the head of table
Focus on the letter to the loved one before burning it their representative candle flame
Return to seat
After the meal (or the optional letter burning) guests rejoin hands and offer a silent prayer to the dead
All guests leave the dining room in silence, pausing at the Spirit chair to give a silent goodbye to the dead
**Listen, I know this one has a lot going on with it but there’s honestly SO MANY ways you can host a dumb dinner…it can be as big or small as you want it to be. The most important part is that there is absolute silence from participants during the dinner and to remember you are honoring the dead.**
Samhain Tarot Spread
For this ritual you will need:
A tarot deck of your choice
*Samhain is seen by some as the end of the year, so use this spread to determine what you should work on in the new year*
Shuffle your cards until you feel its time to ask your question
Find the DEATH card in the deck
The two cards below the DEATH card will tell what you’ll carry into the new year
Stands for the things you couldn’t achieve
Will tell you why
The two cards on top of the DEATH card will tell you about the new year
3. A new challenge that awaits you
4. Something that can help you grow
For this spell you will need:
A length of yarn or sturdy string
Optional: small beads, charms, or feathers
*Colors can be an important representation of your specific wish (like green for money or white for creativity) so if you want to go the extra mile with this, look up what certain colors represent your desire*
Focus on your intent or goal
Take your length of yarn or string and begin knotting it 9 times
With each knot, say the corresponding line of the following:
By knot of one, the spell's begun.
By knot of two, the magic comes true.
By knot of three, so it shall be.
By knot of four, this power is stored.
By knot of five, my will shall drive.
By knot of six, the spell I fix.
By knot of seven, the future I leaven.
By knot of eight, my will be fate.
By knot of nine, what is done is mine
With the last (ninth) knot direct all of your energy into the yarn or string and allow it to be stored deep within the knots
Hang in a place you’ll see it everyday
OPTIONAL
Tie the two ends together to form a circle
Wear as necklace, hang from your car mirror, etc.
Use the knots as a form of meditation to refocus on your goal
**The optional feathers, beads, and charms can be tied into your witch’s ladder as you go to make it more powerful but if you don’t have any on hand no worries**
I know I know, some of these might be difficult to classify as “simple”…looking at your Dumb Dinner, but when I say simple I mean for the most part you don’t need to go find any ridiculous ingredients or tools to complete these spells and rituals. A lot of it can probably be found in your own home already! Between this list and last year’s….I think you’re set to celebrate Samhain in the most magical way possible. Stay lazy my witchy women (and men and nonbinary folks!)
So who plans on joining me in this year’s Lazy Witch spells and rituals? Which one is your favorite on the list and why? Let me know in the comments below!
